EDUCATION BOARD

The Board met at 10 a.m
Present: Rev. D. Sidey, Messrs Tanner, J. N. Williams, R. Harding, R. Dobson, and S. Locke. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From Frazertown Committee, asking for grant to paint schoolhouse. Deferred. From the same, intimating determination to enforce compulsory clause. From Gisborne Committee, forwarding account for £20 15s for erecting the chimneys. Money passed for payment. From Heretaunga Committee, praying for grant ot £150. Approved. From Kaikora Committee, in reference to de-lruction of school by fire. From Matawhero Committee (five letters). The reply to all being that the Board bad no funds. From Napier Committee, (1) recommending Missßobottom for increase of salary. Salary raited to £75 a-year. (2.) Forwarding an application from Miss Bedingßeld for increase of salary. Deferred till after her examination. From the Bishop of Waiapu asking permission to send circulars to the schools in reference to Bible reading in schools. Permission granted. From Mr Gundrie, pointing out the present state of the School Committee at Ormondville. From Patutahi Committee, applying for grant to erect c_imneys. No funds. From Taradale Committee, in reference to appointment of a pupil teacher. From Tarawera, pointing out that the school must be closed owing to circular re ages of children. From Mr Lysnar, complaining of the report upon his school, and stating circumstances of the difficulties he had had to contend with. The Board concluded that the report which appeared in the Hawke's Bay Herald was incorrect, and not in accordance with .the Inspector's report. From Waipawa committee, stating that the school had been closed owing to sickness. (2). Asking for grant to put up two concrete fenders. (3.) Recommending an increase to Miss Craig's salary. Deferred f .ill after her examination. Several communications were read from the Education Department. TENDER. The following tender for the erection of the Kaikora school was accepted : — Bartlett and Newman, £565. NOTICE OF MOTION. By Revd. D. Sidey, " That the secretary inform the Board what schools the scholarship boys are now attending." The Board then adjourned.
