AUCKLAND.

June II

The enquiry into the loss of the schooner Policeman is proceeding at the Police Court.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court today Mr Barstow gave judgment in the case of Hoffman against the captain of the ship Peru for damage to a piano. His Worship held that the defendant was only liable for the case or package, and not for the contents, when the latter was signed for as unknown. The plaintiffs must show the oontentß to have been in good order, and not leave it to inference, but he believed in this instance the contents had been tampered with. He would give judgment for the value of the case, 20s.
