ORDINARY MEETING.
WAINTJI QUARANTINE STATION.
A letter signed by several settlers at Wainui was read protesting against the loDg period for which it waa proposed to lease the quarantine reserve. It was resolved to forward the letter to the Colonial Secretary, and to recommend that the reserve be let ia small blocks. WAIPAWA POUND. Mr Rathbone moved that the impounder be called upon to state why cattle were not impounded off the public Btreets. Carried. ROAD OVERSEER'S REPORT. The following report from the road overseer was read: — I have the honor to report on the wo'.'l_ done during the month. Patangata Riding.—The eastern approach to the Homewood bridga has been repaired and surface work done in other parts of the riding. Contracts have been let since last meeting for metalling at Patangata and forming and metalling at Kaikora. Waipawa Riding.— The contract for the delivery of stones for the river approach into the township has been let during the month; otherwise there has only been a few days surface work done. Tamamu Riding.—The contractor for metalling on the flats has about half done his contract. He has been making good progress since he commenced. Thirty ohains have been formed and metalled on the road in Omakiri Grorge and 40 chains of side cutting completed near Messrs Nairn's end of the road. Some more of this work is now in hand. I have used nearly 200 drain pipes on this road for culverts. Ruataniwha Riding.—Contracts have been let for forming and side-cutting 121 chains of road near Sherwood and Ashley-Clinton. There is not sufficient money available for this work. It will require a further grant of £50. A contract has been let for the delivery of timber for the bridge on the Ruataniwha road. The contract for improving Grant's cutting is still in an. unfinished state.
Waipukurau Riding.—All the works that were being carried on in this riding are now completed. I have inspected Ebbeb's metalling contract and find the work is very fairly done. There are about 20 cubic yards of pai'tly broken surplus metal in his quarry which, if it can be bought at a reasonable price would be useful foi* future repairs. The road from Waipukurau to the boundary is now in very good order. Eparaima Riding.—l have had the main road' from the northern boundary to the Gorge repaired by picking and breaking the old metal, and placing in gravel where required. I had 40 loads of stone broken for this purpose. The road is good from the boundary to the new metal in the Gorge. The men will be employed this month between the Gorge and Wanstead. I have arranged with Mr Hartree for some stone. Parangahau Riding.—The fascining of the worst p_,rfc3 of the road on the flat has been completed and other work done, including a large drain near Mr Healy's for the purpose of confining the outflow of water from the gully, which hithei'to used to flow over the flat and damage the road. Tbe bridle track to Wainui has also been made and some repairs done to the roads ri Wainui.
Horsewood Riding.—There has been no work done during the month. The bridge on the road from Kopua to to Te Whiti requires some repairs, It has been considerably shaken by people dragging heavy logs over it. .
Woodville Riding. —The wo'*ks ordered at Heretaunga settlement are in hand. I have let some works on the Manga-atua-road to M'Donald and Dickens, leading through their sections and also that known as Campbell's Corner. I let the cutting of fascines for the Victoria-road to Ready for 3d each. The carriage of these to the grounds will cost £2 per hundred. I put the men on to fill the wheel ruts in the metal laid down on the same roads, viz., Pinfold's, Sowiy's, and Woodland-roads. In the matter of the petition from Woodville for widening the main road, I measured the road and calculated thit to widen the road to IS feet it will take 1200 cubic yards of metal. This will cost about £60. There is still an available balance of £20 from a former vote for widening the road as required by the petition. Main-road, Seventy-Mile Bush.—l have discharged the men on this, and wish for further instructions in reference to this roa "' _*___. Mackay. Eoad Overseer.
Colonel Herrick moved that the extra expenditure required for the Ruataniwha road be granted as required.—Carried. The overseer was empowered to buy the surplus metal from Ebbett's contract. On the motion of Cr. Smith it was decided to expend £35, in addition to the £20 left from a former vote, in widening the road at Woodville. The overseer was authorised to stop people dragging heavy logs over the bridge on tbe Norsewood road. SEVENTY MILE BUSH ROAD. Mr Rathbone moved that the expenditure incurred on this road during the last month be distributed among the different ridings, pro rata. The motion was carried. FINANCE. The pay-sheet for the month was passed. The Chairman said he had an estimate prepared of receipts and expenditure for the next twelve months, which bad been published. He moved that the estimates be adopted, and that a rate of one shilling in the pound for the year from July Ist 1881, to June 30, 1882, be struck. The motion was carried. POBANGAHAU DBAINS. Mr White moved that £25 be expended In cleansing the drains at Poranghau. Agreed to*
THE WAIPAWA HIVI.R CROSSING. The Chairman reported having seen Mr Harding on the subject of the Waipawa river crossing, and Mr Harding suggested that the new road should start almost opposite gate, making straight across to the river near where the old stockyard stood. Mr Harding was willing to give that road if the old one was closed.
Mr Smith moved that the overseer be instructed to see Mr Harding and make out a tracing of the proposed road, to be submitted at the next meeting. The motion was carried. TAKAPAU AND ASHLEY CLTNTON ROAD. The Chairman moved that Mr Grant's offer to open up the new road on condition that the other roads were closed be accepted. Carried. LOCALISATION OF REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE. The Chairman moved, pursuant to notice, that the resolution enjoining that the money collected should be spent, under the supervision of the overseer, in the ridiug in wh'ch it was raised, be amended, so as to give one riding power to assist another in the matter of such moneys in such a . way aa might be sanctioned by the Council. Colonel Herrick seconded the motion. After some discussion the motion was lost and the matter dropped. SEVENTY-MILE BUSH ROAD. Mr Mackersey moved that the main road through the Seventy-mile Bush be no longer a first charge on the county. The motion was seconded by Mr Dillon. Mr Smith moved as an amendment that the Council vote a sum of £200 towards keeping the road in repair. Mr Levy seconded the amendment. The motion was carried. TENDERS.
Tenders are opened for metalling Grant's Flat, Ruatamwha, but were all rejected as being much higher than the overseer's estimate.
The Council then adjourned
