Enthusiastic preliminary meetings weae held last night at the Theatre Royal and at Burwood in reference to the verdict recently delivered in the Bulletin libel case, and resolutions were passed at both meetings that subscription lists be opened to indemnify the proprietors of the paper for the costs of the trial, which are estimated at £1200. One hundred pounds were promised at the Theatre Royal meeting, and over £20 at Burwood. Large meetings are being organised to carry out the resolutions. The Orient steamer Protos, after leaving her anchorage for England, grounded at Clark Island, and after remaining for eleven hours was got off by the aid of tugboats. She returned to her moorings, and a diver is to examine her to-day and report whether she is seaworthy or not.
