At the wool action to-day 10,000 bales were offered. There was a good demand generally, and full prices were realised. The withdrawals to date since the opening of the present series amount to 41,000 bales.
The Peninsular and Oriental Steamship Company has declared a dividend of 2£ per cent for the half-year.
The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £14,875,500.
May 20. In the House of Commons yesterday the Irish Land Bill was read a second time and passed by a majority of 176. Mr Parnell and the members of the extreme Irish party abstained from voting. At a banquet in the city yesterday evening the Marquis of Salisbury made a epeech, in the course of which he referred to the Irish Land Kill indisparaging terms, severely denouncing the Irish policy of the Government.
