The Bulletin libel case was commenced -on the sth, and fifteen witnesses were called for the plaintiffs. The plaintiff's case closed on the 6th, and the defendant's commenced the same day, and has continued daily since. Twenty-one witnesses have been called up to the present time, and it is understood that many are yet to follow. The case is exciting much attention, the Court being crowded daily. The case was caused by the Bulletin publishing articles alleging gross disorders at Clontaif last Boxing Day. A private telegram was received in Sydney on the sth stating that the steamer Port Breton, one of the vessels chartered by the Marquis DePay, for the purpose of conveying immigrants to New Ireland, has arrived at Singapore with the Marquis on board and six hundred immigrants.

The population of the city and suburbs is 222,133, and of the city alone 102,803. The population of the city in 1861 was 56,394, and 1871 86,159, being an increase in ten years 19,765. The increase between 1871 and 1881 is 26,644.-
