WAIPAWA COUNTY COUNCIL.
THURSDAY, MAY 5.
The Council met at 10.30 a.m. Present: Messrs Johnston (chairman), Dillon, Rathbone, Smith, Levy, and Mackersey.. In the absence of Cr. Smith; moved, " Tbat the notice of motion given by the former re alterations of the Porangahau and Eparaima districts-be postponed until next meeting, - when ?Cr. White would be present." seconded by Cr. Rathbone, and carried unanimously. A letter was read ; from the UnderSecretary of the-Public Works Department stating that the application of the Council for a further grant towards maintenance of the Seventy-mile Bush, road was under consideration. ;Xi \ Regarding a letter received from Mr J. Gienny, that he had disposed of some land to Mr Bridge and others, whose names should appear on the valuation roll instead of bis, it was decided that the clerk be instructed to communicate with Mr Gienny informing him that objection should have been lodged at the proper time with the Judge of Assessment Courts. The Council had no power to deal with the question. A letter was read from Mr James Lawrence, calling attention to the defective drainage on the road adjoining his Homewood property, which in previous years had caused his paddocks to be flooded. After some consultation 7 it was agreed, on the motion of iCr. Dillon, that the road overseer be instructed to open up the drain in question so far as was necessary to protect the road, but no more. A letter from Mr Tiffen, chairman of the Oero Road Board, expressing approval of certain road deviations in bis district (under stipulated conditions) was considered next. It was ultimately decided that the Council had no objection to the Oero Road Board taking over the land required under the Public Works Act, but that the Council had not any jurisdiction so far as conveying back the old roads to Mr Tiffen was concerned.
A terribly long-winded circular emanating from the Rangitikei Council was laid aside after being read, most of the resolutions contained therein having been previously before the Waipawa Council. €sr. Rathbone supported a petition received from Bettlers holding on tbe road leading from Richmond Park towards Patangata, and moved tbat a grant of £50 be voted for repairing said road as requested. Cr. Dillon seconded the motion, which was carried. The consideration of a long petition signed by Woodviile residents was postponed to next meeting. No special interest attached to" the works reported by the overseer as having been done during the month in 4he several ridings. On the overseer's recommendation the following works were approved of, to be done forthwith:— Tenders to be called for formation and metalling of road through Kaikora township. A sum of £20 was authorised for forming and metalling done at Dillon's cutting Patungata. A grant of £50. was allowed for repairs recommended on road leading to Tamumu from - the Waipawa railway station. Overseer to expend whatever sum he may consider necessary in repairing Eparaima road opposite Mr Hartshorn's. Overseer to call for tenders for delivery of '2500' feet of timber for culvert near Clark's property in the Ruataniwba riding. Work of clearing road to Messrs Edgecombe's and Forward's property.fMakaretu, to be carried out, as per offer made by these parties. A motion by Cr. Smith, to the effect that the Council put in proper repair three bridges on the Seventy-mile Bush
road, as suggested by the overseer, was negatived. It was agreed, on the motion of Cr. Mackersey, that the road overseer receive a bonus to the amount of £25 for the extra labor he was called upon to do last year on roads after the floods.
Agreed tbat Mr Inglis, clerk, receive an additional salary of £50 per annum for acting as treasurer. Resolved that the County rate collector be instructed to sue all defaulters without delay; also, that the dog tax collector receive a like instruction.
Cr. Smith, on behalf of Cr. Gaisford, objected to the employment of a suboverseer on the Seventy-mile Bush road, whose salary was charged to the Woodviile riding. It was agreed that this officer receive a month's notice to quit, and tbat no more labor than is absolutely necessary be employed on tbe road in question. Or. Mackersey submitted a notice of motion substantially the same as that moved by him several months ago, having reference to rescinding a resolution of the Council which makes the main road through tbe Seventy-mile Bush a first charge on the County. The remaining business was unimportant.
