MELBOURNE

May 3. Both Houses of Parliament reassembled to-day after the recess. In the Legislative Council Sir Charles Sladen made a statement regarding the Reform Bill. He stated that he bad no objection to the same being considered on its second reading, but he considered it useless to discuss the measure further, as he was convinced tbat no agreement would be arrived at with the Assembly. Dr. Hector, the Executive Commissioner for New Zealand at the late laternational Exhibition, has left for Sydney, and will leave tbat port for Wellington by the Wakatipu. Before his departure Dr. Hector completed arrangements for packing and forwarding the exhibits in the New Zealand court. Among the awards made to New Zealand exhibitors, Messrs A. and T. Burt, of Dunedin, secured six first orders of merit, including a gold medal. The Mosgiel Woollen Factory Company also have been awarded a gold medal. The following exhibitors also take first orders of merit: — Wriggleswortb and Binns, Wellington, for photographers; Dr. Hector and Dr. W. L.

Buller, Wellington, for publications ; the Brunner Coal Company, for fireclay goods; E. Mitchelson, Dargaville, for kauri gum; T. C. Tully, Auckland, for arrowroot; Peter M'GilJ, Tokomairiro, for groats. May 4. In the Legislative Counoil last night, after the statement made by Sir Charles Slanden, the Reform Bill was, read a second time pro forma.
