In the Honse ot Commons to-day Sir Charles Dilke, the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, made a statement regarding the negotiations for the settlement of the Turco-Greek difficulty. He announced that the Sultan had finally accepted the understanding which had been arrived at between the Porte and the Hellenic Government.
In the House of Commons this evening the Irish Land Bill again came up for consideration on its second reading. In the course of the debate Lord Elcho, the member for Haddington, acting on behalf of the Conservatives, made a speech in which he denounced the provisions of the bill, and concluded by moving its rejection as a whole by the House. The discussion on the motion continues.
A Ministerial Bill has been introduced by the Right Hon. W. B. Gladstone, providing that persons who are permitted to affirm in Courts of Law should be authorised to make an affirmation on their entry into Parliament, in place of the customary oath of allegiance. Mr Labouchere, M.P. for Northampton, has given notice in the House of Commons of a motion condemning the proposal to be submitted shortly by the Premier that funds should be voted for the erection of a monument to the late Earl of Beaconsfield in Westminster Abbey. May 3. Mr John Dillon, M.P. for Tipperary, and one of the chief agitators of the Land League, has been arrested in Ireland on a warrant issued by the Viceroy under the Coercion Act.
