Numerous complaints have reached us from consignees at the apparently unnecessary delay in the receipt of goods by the Union Company's steamers, more especially concerning those by last boat from the South. In reference to the remarks made by Cr. M'Dougall at the meeting of the Borough Council about the dangerous nature of the quarry in Chaucer-road, Mr J. R. Davies assures us that his quarry in the Chaucerroad was left in a perfectly safe condition; he has nothing whatever to do with the quarry adjoining, which is now being worked, nor has he any dispute with the owners. Mr Davies courts the most thorough, examination and enquiry into the condition 5i which his quarry was left.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday the following , civil cases were disposed of:— Laird v. Howie andTinckler; adjourned till 9th May. Clara Ford v. Smith, claim £0 for wages ; judgment for plaintiff for £7 4s Id with costs. Price and Innes v. Bours-eoise, claim £13 9s for goods supplied ; judgment for plaintiff, execution to bo stayed for one month. Lascelles v. Merritt, claim £45 4s 2d for professional services; judgment for plaintiff for £42 10s 2d, with costs and counsel's fee.

At the meeting of the Borough Council last night, when the report of the subcommittee appointed to report upon the botanical gardens was read, Cr. Leonard said that he had objected in committee to that portion of the report which referred to the very generous conduct of Capt. llussell in presenting the gardens with, a bag of grass eeed, because he believed that Mr Sutton had expressed his intention of presenting the committee with, a lawn-mower, so that the electors of the borough might have a nice green sward to look at before the next ejection,
