Iα consequence of the dangers attached to passing through the French Pass, the captains of the vessels in port are drawing up a petition to the ministerial head of the Marine Department urging him to take immediate steps to have suitable lights there. The charge against Frederick Marshant Hadfield for being an accomplice in the alleged stealing of 1,000 sheep off a run in the Wairarapa, has been dismissed, no evidence being offered. At the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, John Henry Whitelaw, late SuperinteDde it of the Mount View Asylum, was committed for trial for the ill-treatment of a patient named M'lntosh. Bail was fixed at himself in £300, rud two sureties of £150 each. The accused, however, was unable 13 obtain bail, and was conveyed to gaol. Instructions have been issued to the Deputy Pro} ?rty Tax Commissioners throughout t 1 colony to take proceedings against defaulters. Long Bros., who it is alleged intended absconding from their creditors at Picton, were brought up at the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, and remanded to Picton.
