April 4. The Island of Ohio, in the Greek Archipelago, near Anatolia, has been visited by a terible earthquake, destructive alike to life and property. The injured number no less than 300. April 6.

The Irish Land Bil> which has been introduced into the House of Commons as a portion of the new legislation for Ireland, provides for the free sale of land, and fair rent fora fixed tenure of fifteen years. An indemnity is to be paid to the tenant if disturbed before the expiration of the lease equal to seven-fifths, or three years rent, according to assessment.

The departments concerned are actively discussing the proposed change of the date of the leparture of the P. and O. steamers from Melbourne from Monday to Tuesday, as urged by the Victorian Postal Department. The Indian Office and the Post Office oppose the proposed alteration, and the Colonial Office supports Victoria. The question is now before the Lords of toe Treasury. If Victoria firmly maintains her proposal the point will in all probability be decided in her favor.

The annual boat race between Oxford and Cambridge took place this morning on the Thames over the usual course from Putney to Mortlake. The weather was fine, with warm sunshine, and the water emooth. There was a large attendance on the river bank and in the accompanying steamers. The betting at the start was 3 to 1 on Oxford. Oxford won the toss, elected to take the Middlesex side of the river, and went ahead at first, rowing aa even steady stroke. It was a good race for a mile. The Oxford crew led to Hammersmith Bridge, and were well in front at Barnes, and won easily by four lengths. Time 21 minutes 56 eeconde.

In the House of Lords to-day the Duke of Argyle, in makiog a personal explanation for the reasons which led to the resignation by him of the office of the Privy Heal, said that the Irish Land Bill introduced by the Government of which he had so recently been a member, condemned the action of the landlords in regard to the ownership of the land, and was injurious to agriculture. The American journals approve of the Irish Land Bill introduced by the Gladstone government in the House of Commons. Mr Joseph Charaberlaia, President of the Board of Trade, has introduced a new Bankruptcy Bill into the House of Commons. Mr Bradlaugh has been re-elected for Northampton by a majority of 122 votes. The Boers aie continuing outrages on those of their countrymen who during the war remained loyal to the British crown. Her Majesty's ships Thunderer, Bittern, and Antelope, have sailed for Chio to render relief to the unfortunate sufferers by the late disastrous earthquake. A surgeon and every appliance for the relief of the wounded are on board each vessel. Thomas Carlyle lias bequethed to the Harvard University in America the books he used in writing the histories of Oliver Cromwell and Frederick the Great of Prussia. April 11. It is reported that the Greeks have refused the offer oi the European Powers to negotiate with Turkey for the settlement of Greece's claims. The death is announced of Prince Pierre Napoleon Bonaparte, the third son of Lucien Bonaparte, a nephew of Napoleon 1., 65 years of age.

A Fenian scare has occurred atHawarden Castle, Cheshire, Mr Gladstone's country seat. The police have been ordered to the spot.

Mr Parnell, in the course of a speech on the new Irish Land Bill introduced by the Government, said that in two years he would give free land and the right to Irishmen to make laws for their own country.
