FIRE BRIGADES COMPETITION.

The annual compelition of the .Napier and Port Ahuriri Brigades will be held on Monday next, 18th instant, on the ground opposite Mr E. Lyndon's auction mart, commencing at 11.30 a.m. The following is the programme: — First event.—Hose and Hydrant; two men to run one hundred yards to fireplug, carrying hydrant branch and one 50 feet length of wet canvas hose ; connect to plug, and show water at branch ; limited to three teams from each brigade. First prize, four guineas presented by Mr H. Williams ; second prize, two guineas presented by Mr W. E. Comb 9. Entries: Town brigade, first team Sub-Superin-tendent J. Gilberd and Brancbman W. Bogle ; second team, Brancbman E. Coe and Brancbman Gr. Holland ; tbird team, Foreman W. Hartley and Firemaa 0. Simmonds. Port brigade, first team, Fireman F. G. Smith and Fireman W. Lucas; second team, Foreman J. Fraser and Fireman J. Gifford.

Second event, single-handed. One man to put each manual engine into working order. Limited to four men from each brigade. First prize, medal presented by his Worship the Mayor; extra special prize, value efcht guineas, presented by Messrs Ruddock and Fryer, and a valuable trophy presented by Messrs Neal and Close. The last prize has special conditions attached, viz., to be competed for annually, the winner to hold it until next competition ; to be won twice consecutively, or three times independently, before it becomes the absolute property of the owner. Second prize, an all-over quilted riding saddle, value five guineas, presented by Mr John M'Vay. Third prize, two volumes of books, value 355, presented by Messrs Dinwiddie, Walker and Co. Fourth prize, a pair of boots, presented by Mr Thos. Garrett. Entries: Town Brigade—Sub-Superintendent J. G. Gilberd, Branchman W. Bogle, Branchman G. Holland, and Fireman 0. Simmond?. Port Brigade—Foreman J. Fraser, Firemen W. Lucas, W. Taylor, and W. Lyncb.

Third event, Hose and Ladder.—-Five men to run one hundred yards to fire plug, dragging hose-reel, connect to plug, and lay off one hundred feet of hose ; erect ladder to platform, send up hose and branch ?nd show water. First prize, silver cup, with five guineas added, presented by Mr R. Barrows, and two pounds five shillings added by committee; second prize, silver cup presented by Mr H. 11. Wall, with £5 added by the committee. Entries : First team, J. G. Gilberd, W. Hartley, E. Coe, G. P. Holland, and W. Bogle; second team, C. Simmonds, A. Faulknor, J. Hudson, A. W. Cottrell, and B. Harding. Port Brigade : First team, J. Fraser, T. Connor, P. Attwell, J. Gifford, and C. Cranby; second team, W. Lynch, F. G. Smith, W. Lucas, A. Waddell, and L. Lucas.

Fourth event. —Four men drill; each manual engine to be put in working order, laying off two 50 feet lengths of canvas hose from each side. First prize, value ten guineas, presented by the Licensed Victuallers' Association; second prize, four sets gold studs, presented by Mr S. E. Cooper, with £4 added by the committee. Eotries : Town Brigade, first team, J. J. Gilberd, W. Bogle, J. P. Holland, and E. Coe; second team, W. Hartley, C. Simmonds, J. Hudson, and A. Faulknor. Po.t Brigade, first team, J. Fraser, W. Taylor, W. Lucas, and W. Lynch; second team, T. G. Smith, A. Waddell, J. Gifford, and C. Cranby. Fifth event.—Eight men to run with small engine lay off two lengths of hose, and throw water over rope. First prize, £8 given by Fire Insurance Association. Entries, Town Brigade, J. G. Gilberd, E. Coe, G. P. Holland, W. Bogle, W. Hartley, C. Simmonds, W. Chappell, and J. Hudbon. Port Brigade, J. Frazer, T. Connor, W. Lynch, F. G. Smith, J. Gifford, A. Waddell, W. Lucas, and W. I Taylor.

Sixth event. —Eight men to run with large manual engine, lay off two lengths of hose, and throw water over rope. First prize, £8, given by the Fire Insurance Association. Entries : Town Brigade—Hartley, Cottrell, Holland, Hudson, Symmonds, Chappell, Bogle, and Love. Port Brigade, same as in manual, Seventh event. —Hose-reel, flat, lay oft two lengths and throw water over rope. First prize, £12. Entries: Town Brigade —Gilberd, Symmonds, Holland, Hudson, Bogle, Coe, Hartley, and Cottrell. Port Brigade, same as engine team; emergency men, P. Atwell. C. Cranby, and T. Lucas.
