AUCKLAND.

April 11. Two railway employees named Grey and Jolly were out shooting in the Waikato, when Grey, sighting some game, stood up to fire, but the boat lurched, and the gun exploded and discharged its contents, blowing away the back of Jolly's head, killing him instantly.

Joseph Hill, residing at the Commercial Hotel, accidently took a poisonous lotion instead of medicine. The doctor was called, and by prompt measures averted any serious consequences. In the Police Court to-day Mr W. L. Rees, solicitor, Gisborne, formerly M.H.R., commenced a series of criminal prosecutions against Mr J. D. Wickham, of the Free Lance. The defendant asked for an adjournment, which was granted till Thursday. A little boy, the son of Mr J. R. M'Donald, Government insurance agent at Hamilton, fell into the Waikato river and was drowned.

Two young children who fell from different wharves in Auckland harbor on Saturday were rescued by the bystanders jumping in. At the half-yearly meeting of the South British Insurance Company to-day the report showed the income from fire and marine premiums to be £65,872, and from interest on transfer fees £5,185, making a total of £71,057, which, added to the £11.971 brought forward from the previous half-year, makes a total ot £83,029. The total expenditure was by fire and marine losses paid and outstanding at the close of the books, £32,830 ; reinsurances, £14,288; agent's commissions, salaries, rente, &c, £13,461 ; advertising, printing, and stationery, £794 ; Underwriter's Association, Fire Brigades, £697; Government licenses, £424, making a total of £62,396, which, with £5000 dividend paid, increases it to £67,396, leaving a balance of £15,633 at the credit of the profit and loss account, from which the directors recommend the payment of a divideud of ten per cent. The dividend will be payable at the head office of the company on April 12th, and at the branches on receipt of advices.
