VICTORIA.

The executive committee of the Exhibition has decided to confine the issue of medals to awards of the first class.

In the Assembly on Tuesday the Land Tax Bill occupied the whole of the evening. Mr Berry made an impassioned speech. He said the tax was imposed as a tax against the monopoly of those who held up large estates. The people would not be couped up or blinded by any sophistry of public opinion. This question was not dead, hut sleeping. He inveighed against the owners of large estates, and spoke of some of them as having beeu obtained by fraud.

In reply to a deputation Mr Berry stated that it was the intention of the Government to advocate a fresh loan shortly.

A caucus of the Council was held on Tuesday, when it was agreed to negative Mr Read's motion disagreeing with the ruling of the President, but notice would be given to wave all technical objections anrl proceed with the bill on its merits, which was done on Wednesday.
