Last night Mr Collins, M.H.R., gave a dinner at Stoke in honor of Lieut. Paynter, the rifle champion. There was a laree attendance. During the evening remarks were made regarding the treatment of Volunteers by the Government. The necessity for retrenchment was admitted, but a hope was expressed that the Volunteer vote would be the first to
be increased. Both Messrs Pitt and Collins, M.H.R.'s, supported an. increased Volunteer vote, and Lieut. Paynter stated that Mr Hursthouse, M.H.R., was of the same opinion.
