(PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Waipukurau, March 5,
The opening of Messrs Wilding and Bull's new sawmill was celebrated to-day at 12 o'clock. A large number of people were on the ground, including tbe workmen, and lady and gentlemen visitors. Steam being got up at 12.10, Mr Sutton, M.H.R., mounted a large totara log which lay on a travelling bench ready to be ripped, and delivered a suitable speech, congratulating Waipukurau on her increase of industries. He also spoke of the enterprise and public spiritedness of the proprietors, and hoped the mill would be a success. Mr Wilding then christened the mill by breaking a bottle of champagne on the first log to be sawn amidst three hearty cheers from all present.
Various kinds of work incidental were then exhibited under the direction of Mr Scarrott, the manager. Everything worked magnificently. Mr Martin, photographer, took two photos of the mill and hands, etc.
The luncheon in the Town Hall is now proceeding:, there being a grand spread by Host Govv. By tbe time your readers see this the first cutting of timber will be on its way to Nelson, Bros, establishment at Hastings, leaving here per the 3.45 train.
The weather is beautiful
