EDUCATION BOARD AND THE TARADALE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
["To the Editor ob , the Daily Telegbaph.] Sir, —The numerous letters that have appeared in your columns, respecting the act and doings of the Taradale School Committee would lead one to the conclusion that to meet the requirements of the residents of Taradale an Education Act sboula" be framed for their own special use. This belief, it would almost is shared in by the Education Board, as the decision arrived at at its last meeting in regard to the election of Messrs Dolbel and Bennett to seats on the committee is not only peculiar, but looks something like driviDg a coach and four through the 58th clause of the Education Act. This clause enacts that " members of the committee shall be residents within the school district," and it was on this ground that a petition from the residents of Taradale to the Education Board against the election of Messrs Dolbel and Bennett was based. Few, I think, can be found that will for one moment dispute the desirability of such men as Messrs Dolbel and Bennett being members of School Committees, or indeed any of our local boards, but such seats should always be secured by constitutional means. If Mr Dolbel be not eligible fora seat on the Taradale School Committee on account of being a resident in the Puketapu district, although his property extejds to within a stone'sthrow of the schooll, how can Mr Bennet, may I ask, retain his seat, his place of residence being Omaranui, and in the Okawa school district.—l am, &c, Tahadalb. Taradale, February 21st, 1881.
