WAIROA.
(from oub own cokhespondent.) February 19, 1881. Monday last was quite a lively day in the township, as a sitting of the R. M. Court and an election for members of the Wairoa Harbor Board were going on at the same time. Messrs Williams and Toha, for Clyde Riding, and Messrs Tunks and Brown, for Waikaremoana Riding, with the County Chairman (exofficio) from the Harbor Board bo far. I believe two other members are to be appointed by the Governor, and then the Board will be complete. Captain Preece was not idle during his short visit on Monday morning he held a sitting of the Court; in the_ afternoon met the natives at Rua Taniwha, and arranged with them for three acres for a school site; on Tuesday he went up aod saw it surveyed j started fot Mf&ii
at 6 p.m. in pouring rain, end every prospect of a bad nigh c; camped out in an old whare on the road ; procured a fresh horse at Nubaka, and arrived at Mahia at 10 a.m.; on Wednesday held a sitting of the Court; left for Wairoa at 3 p.m., where he arrived at 10 p.m.; left by Result for Napier at 7.30 on Thursday moruing. Mr Henderson, local agent of the Bank of New Zealand, has been transferred to Wellington. His successor, Mr Porter, arrived yesterday. Mr Preece held a sitting of the Resident Magistrate's Court at Mahia on Wednesday, 16th instant. All the cases had been settled out of Court except Teretin v. Campbell, a claim of £20 for having left Nnhuka church uncompleted. Plaintiff and bis three witnesses all made very long-winded statements, when defendant was sworn, who stated for his defence that the plaintiff had agreed to find him in food and also in building material. As both had run short, he was forced to leave. He enumerated what articles were required. The Court ordered that the plaintiff, if he wanted the church finished, procure these articles At once, and give defendant notice when he had done so. Defendant to complete the church within one month after receipt of notice. Costs of Court divided.
