MOTUEKA.
February 15
Mr Hursthouse, M.H.R., addressed the electors here last night. He looked upon the idea of repudiation with utter scorn. Commenting on the way the loans had been expended, he said all must contribute alike to meet the liabilities, notwithstanding they have not had a fair amount of expenditure. He was against borrowing in future in the same way as in the past. He spoke strongly against the way in which Ministers were chosen: they should be selected on account of their abilities, and not solely because they'came from Otago, Auckland, and Canturbury, and he spoke somewhat strongly against the large expenditure in favor of Taranaki. He regretted the resignation of Mr Bryce, which he attributed to that gentleman being unable to carry his views in the Ministry that Hiroki should bo arrested.
He spoke against the payment of members of the Upper House, and said it might be advantageous to abolish the payment of members altogether and for electorates during the return of poor men to providetheir expenses themselves. Mr Hursthouse received a unanimous vote of confidence.
