Mr Fox, a late Inspector of Police, was presented with a purse ol sovereigns and a testimonial to-day by the Mayor and inlluentinl citizens. There is great excitement over the Harbour Board election, there being six candidates for seats representing the town. Mr Spurgeon, a son of the Rev. Mr Spurgeon, of London, preached twice yesterday to immense congregations. His style as a preacher is conversational, ancl free from rant or swang. Bishop Moran, at the Catholic Church yesterday, announced that the erection of a convent would be commenced shortly.
