WASTE LANDS BOARD.

The Board met at 11 a.m

Present—The Chief Commissioner (in the chair), Messrs H. S. Tiffen, R. Harding, J, Buchanan, and X. Tanner.

COBHE3PONDENCB. The following correspondence was read : — From Colonel Lambert, requesting leave of absence for three sittings on account of il! health.—Granted. From Mr T. F. Fountaine, Woodville, stating that he had been requested by a nnmber cf settlers to apply for a grant of town Section No. 29 on which to erect a building to be used as a public hall.—lt was decided that Mr Fountaine be informed that the section applied for has been reserved as a site for post and telegraph offices, but if at a meeting of settlers it was considered advisable to apply for a site for a mechanics' institute, and the chairman of the meeting forwarded particulars of the proceedings of the meeting, the Board would consider the application.

From Mr Christian Christiansen, complaining that road parties had felled timber on to his land, and requesting compensation.—lt was decided that Mr Christiansen be informed that the Board could not entertain his claim.

From the secretary to the Heretaunga Small Farm Association, requesting the Board to rescind their resolution of the 6th of May last, requesting that Mr W. J. Graham's selection in that settlement be re-allotted to a bona fide settler on account of Mr Graham's non-residence.—lt was decided that as the Special Powers and Contracts Act, 1880, authorised the Governor to issue Crown grants to members of the Heretaunga Small [Farm Association in cases where the required improvements have been effected, but where the member has not actually resided on his selection, the Board would not object to the committee of management allowing Mr Graham to occupy section No. 1.

From the secretary to the Victoria Small Farm Association, relative to arrears due from members, and statiog that another instalment would be paid shortly.—As the letter did not give the inrofmation asked for as to whether the committee of management proposed to take any steps to dispose of the shares held by members who had failed to pay their instalments for our successive quarters, and as also a list of such defaulters was not furnished as requested, it was decided that the secretary to the association be requested to reply more explicitly to the letter sent to him. From Mr C. Hutching, requesting permission to transfer section 1 Bush Mills-Settlement- for the beneßt of the estate of the late John Jlutshins. —It was decided that a transfer would be allowed to a bond fide settler approved | by the Board on letters of administration being produced for inspection, and proof being adduced that Mr C. Hutchins is the legal representative of the deceased. From Messrs Cornford and Dewes, asking tbat a further extension of time within which to pay arrears due by Mrs Goddard be granted in consequence of her being unable to obtain letters-of jVrninistration during the absence of the District Judge.—Agreed to. APPLICATIONS. The application of John and Thomas Holden for the purchase of 138 acres in the Wakarau district was granted. TUTAE-O-MATU BLOCK. The Board resolved, with reference to the survey of the Tutae-o-Matu block, that the road should start from the northwestern corner of suburban section No. 14, Awatoto. DEFAULTERS. The Chairman reported that the following persons had failed to pay their second instalments on lands purchased on deferred payments :—P. M'Sweeney. J, M'Sweeney, Charles Biros, and J. Austen. —It was decided that notice be sent to them that unless the instalments were paid within 28 days from date their rights to the land would be forfeited. In the case of Richard Alderman, to whom notice had been given on the 29th November last, that he had not fulfilled the conditions under which he had selected lands, it was decided (as Mr Alderman had not intimated his intention of appealling) that the land he selected be forfeited to Her Majesty. The Board then adjourned.
