AN EXPLANATION.
[To the Editor of the Daily Tbleguaph.l Sir,—-In the Waipawa Mail of this morning a leader appears in which I am handled rather severely. It says I made charges agiinst the Waipukurau Caledonian Sports Committee which were Utterly untrue. Some time ago, when the subscription lists were first sent out, I was informed by a Waipukurau gentleman that the surplus funds received from the sports were to be devoted to the County Hospital. He said he had his information from a committee-man. It appears that my informant must have misunderstood the conversation ; or perhaps it was a pet notion of the member of the committee, which was not brought forward at any of their meetings. It was also freely talked of by the public on the sports ground on New Year's Day that the profits arising from " Aunt Sally " were to go to the Hospital, but I suppose that was only a rumor like the previous one, lam extremely sorry that any unpleasantness has occurred, and hasten to give my reason for writing the paragraph. Happening to be in Napier today, I am enabled to send you this in time for publication in this afternoon's paper.—l am, &c,
Waipawa Correspondent Napier, January 29, 1881.
