MR. NORTH'S SWEEP.
["To the Editoe of the Daily Telegbaph.] Sic, —Mr North's " little came " forme the text of a most scathing sermon in to-day's issue of oar local " rag." It ia overpoweringly moral. "No rightminded person can feel any sympathy for the victims of their own covetousness." "The gain of the winner is no less a robbery because the losers have consented to be plundered that they may stand a chancs of plundering others." The promoters of sweeps " are no better than a cancer in the community." " They dangle a bait before the eyes of the simple, and by promise of large and easily-gotten gains, the apprentice, the office-boy, and the clerk, are again and again led into acts of dishonesty and breaches of trust." Now, Sir, I did'nt rob a till, nor break a trust, but some weeks ago I had a few pounds to spare, and knowing the high moral standing of our " rag" I looked through its columns for an investment, and there I saw Mr North's advertisement. I assure you, Sir, there was no foot-note or local warning readers of the cancerous nature of the business, or that it was a bait to trap the unwary. On the strength of this advertisement in a highly moral newspaper off went a portion of my hard-earned money to Wellington. And now lam told that no right-minded person will have any sympathy for me. I wonder if the Waipawa Mail was paid for that advertisement. If not, I haven't an atom of sympathy for it. If the sweep had gone off all right, and the winners been paid, it is a certainty that the Waipawa Mail would have gained more than the great majority of subscribers, and we should have been spared this moral lecture. It was the Waipawa Mail which dangled this immoral bait before my simple eyes.—l am, &c,
A Victim. Waipawa,*22nd"January, 1881.
