January 17. Owing to the large quantity of floating ice on the Thames, the race between Hanlan and Laycock could not take place to-day. The Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone hae recovered from the cold from which he was recently suffering. The Rev. T. P. Dale, and the Rev. Mr Enright, Ritualistic clergymen, who were imprisoned for contempt of tbe orders of the Court of Arcbes have been discharged from custody, it having been found that the write under which they were arrested were defective. Further news to hand from Central Asia states that the Turcomans recently made an unsuccessful sortie from Geok Tepe, being heavily repulsed by the Russians, who then stormed the outworks. The conflict was most sanguinary, and resulted in heavy loss to both sideo.
