CHRISTCHURCH.
January 10,
Mr Brown, one of the engineers who recently made a flying survey of the proposed railway to the West Coast, has been sent to Wellington to interview the Government respecting the construction of the projected line. Replying to a correspondent, the Times states that when the Government steamer brought Wharepa, the murderer, from the Chatham Islands, an offer was made to him to bring any witness he desired, but this was declined.
At a meeting of the members of the Corn Exchange on Saturday, it was unanimously resolved to continue the exchange, and make strong efforts to obtain more support.
In the Supreme Court this morning Walter Pringle Gibson was charged with the murder of William Kerrisone. Mr Holmes applied for a postponement of the trial till next session, as the plea for the defence would be insanity, to establish which he would require a month to collect evidence. The postponement was granted. The American brigantine J. W. Parker cleared at Lyttelton this morning for London.
