MUNICIPAL ENGINEER.
[To the Editor of the Daily Teleguaph.l Sib, —In reference to my notice of motion in the Council last night, that the opinion of the Municipal Solicitor should be obtained as to what damages Mr Marcbant could claim in the event of the Council rescinding the appointment as engineer, I beg to forward to you the following communication I have this day received from the Mayor. I should add that I withdrew my notice of .motion in consequence of receiving the Mayor's promise that the Town Clerk would obtain the information asked for by me, and give it to the Council. —I am, &c, George Ellis, Councillor. January 6, 1881. With reference to your memo, requesting that the opinion of the Solicitor re the appointment of Mr Marchant should be obtained, I beg to inform you that, on reconsideration of the matter, I am of opinion that it will be Mr Marchant's place to discover whether his appointment is legal or not, and that you had therefore (should you desire it) give notice of motion calling for the information you require.
