Tramways Official Retires

Mr. F. S. Marchant, superintendent,of permanent way for the Wellington City Council’s tramways department has retired after 41 yeays’ service. .He joined the department in 1994 as second engineer at the Jervois Quay power station, in the days when these stations had to develop all the power needed for the tramways, He became construction engineer in '1927, and six years later superintendent of permanent way. This position involved much worry during the years of war, due to the difficulty of securing enough and the right kind of labour to keep the tracks in order. Mr. Marchant is being succeeded by Mr. F. Malcolm, overhead equipment superintendent, who will now combine the two positions. Mr. A. Laurie has been appointed assistant to Mr. Malcolm.
