POTATO SHORTAGE

Reasons For Failure Of Crop

Many households in Wellington have not had potatoes for the last week or two, though a few very early new potatoes are now being offered for sale in some shops at luxury prices. Approximately 30,000 acres of potatoes were planted last season, and the appearance of the crops in January indicated that there would be a record yield, said an officer of the Department of Agriculture yesterday. However, blight began to develop in February tn all the potato-growing areas, including Canterbury, which is not usually affected. Continued wet weather made the ground sodden, preventing digging at the correct time, and the potatoes began to rot in the ground. Crops which it had been thought would yield well above average actually yielded well below average, and some were not worth digging at all. The arrival soon of potatoes from Australia is expected to relieve the shortage till the new season’s crop begins to come on the market in quantity in two to three months’ time.
