Record U.S. Air Assault On Europe (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 4. Fortresses and Liberators of the Eighth Air Force in June flew more tlit'j 25,600 sorties over Europe. Eighth Air Force Lightnings, Thunderbolts, and Mustangs eclipsed all previous records with 24,920 sorties. Altogether, individual bomber and lighter crews made more than 280,000 crossings into enemy territory. In the course of these almost continuous attacks, heavy bombers dropped 57,600 tons of high explosives and incendiaries, while fighter-bombers added 1750 tons. This is equivalent to hitting the enemy with 1 1-3 tons of bombs every minute during the month. The United States’ losses, 225 heavy bombers and 211 fighters, represented less than 1 per cent, of the aircraft dispatched. Mustangs, Thunderbftlts, and Lightnings destroyed 293 enemy interceptors iu aerial combat and many more on the ground, and bomber gunners shot down 55 more.
