Soldiers’ Gratuities
Si r> —My attention has been drawn to a letter in ‘‘The Dominion” of July 3, in which Mr. A. B. Sievwright refers to a meeting of returned soldiers of which he has “a full report, and it does not appear that Mr. Perry was present.” Since that implies that the statement of Mr. W. Perry, M.L.C., to the R.S.A. conference was incorrect, I, as chairman at that time, must give tire facts as 1 remember them. There was not only one, meeting, and it is quite clear in my mind (and also in the minds of other persons consulted) that Mr. Perry was present, took part in a discussion, and, was given a iiostile reception by a section on one ot these occasions. It is also h fact that at one of the meetings the Press withdrew in protest, owing to remarks by some persons there. It may or may not be that it was this meeting to which Mr. Perry referred. This is not important. It is important, however, to say that Mr. Perry’s statement regarding his hostile reception is correct. —I am. etc. —J. D. HARPER. Wellington, July 4.
