GERMAN LOSSES MAY TOTAL 100,000
Situation In Normandy i (Received Julv 4. 1.30 a.m.) ’ LONDON, July 3. I The Allies hold a bridgehead of 1100 square miles, running for 125 miles along the Normandy coast, with a zigzag front Hl miles long, and having , the greatest width inland of 20 miles, says the British United Press correspondent at tile Allied hearquarters. The establishment of the bridgehead I has resulted in 90,000 to 100,000 enemy casualties. There has been enemy activity on (lie Evrcey sector in the past 12 hours. British patrols worked their way forward to the village of Brettevillette, in the north-west corner of the salient, and found tile village clear of the enemy, but there were many bobbytraps. Rommel may be going to use armour and, artillery properly in a big attack, but tile Allies consider as satisfactory the evidence that some of the seven panzer divisions flic Germans are using come from strategical reserves. Also they are using skilled panzer personnel as infantry, which is an indication that, the Allied air forces have prevented sufficient tanks from being brought up for correct use by panzer personnel.
The weather over the bridgehead was extremely bad early this morning, reducing air activity to a minimum. The weather, however, is favourable for the navy, and the unloading on the beaches has continued without a piiuse. Heavy rain fell in the .Straits of Dover -this morning with cloud almost at sea level, but the weather was <t little brighter at midday.
