Late War News AMERICANS ON ATTACK

Western Side Of Peninsula NEW PHASE OPENS IN NORMANDY LONDON, July 3. The United .States First Army under General Otnar Bradley lias begun an attack on the western side of the Cherbourg Peninsula in the general direction of La Haye du I’uits. The attack was opened with a heavy artillery barrage, and infantry went forward in rain and mud: and with little aerial support because of low cloud. The attack is taking place on a narrow sector near the coast. La Haye du Puits is an important road centre seven miles inland at the base of the peninsula. General Bradley told correspondents that the .attack was the first positive sign of the opening of a. new phase m the Normandy campaign. Near St. Lo ,on the central sector, the Americans have made a minor attack to improve their positions.
