MERCHANT SEAMEN
Plea For Equal Privileges With Soldiers A plea that men of the Merchant Marine, when on brief leave in New Zealand. should receive facilities at least equal to those granted to soldiers was made yesterday by a sailor homo on leave from a long voyage overseas. He said their chief need was railway travelling facilities to enable them to spend a few days with their families while their ships were in New Zealand ports. American and New Zealand soldiers and airmen, he said, had special travelling facilities, both as regards priority and cost, and he contended that men of the Merchant Marine, who were giving better service at least than soldiers cm home service, were entitled to equal privileges. There had been more casualties in the present war among men of the Merchant Marine than among personnel of the Royal Navy. During recent leave of JO’ day's in New Zealand, he had only been able to spend three days with his family, due to having been unable to obtain leave Io travel by rail.
