Patriotic Committee Report The mayoress of "Wellington, Mrs. Appleton, ’ presided for the first time " recently at a meeting of the Wellington Women's Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, of which she is now chairman. She was welcomed by Mrs. Knox Gilmer, who assured her of the members’ co-opera-tion in the committee’s many activities. Airs. Appleton. who presented a report detailing the vast amount, of work dispatched since 1940, said that the standard of knitting was still very high. “For some time we have had very good stocks of wool, and since July, 1943. we have been assisting'Air Force Relations with the extra demand for knitted garments.” she said. Since 1940, 28,6b3 pairs oi mittens. 26,919 balaclavas. 20,149 scarves. 2729 pairs of socks. 1031 pullovers, 994 cups, 887 pairs of gloves and 314 ernnwell jerseys had been made, which was equivalent to approximately 15,6851 b. of wool knitted up. 1 . In addition to the 5408 pairs of mittens made from sock tops in 1942, when the amount of wool available was insufficient to meet the high demand for knitted ar-, tides, recently 100 pairs were made from sock tops on hand, and these were sent to returned soldiers in hospital. Since April. 1940. when the women commenced making tbc hussifs from material supplied hv the Army Department, and tin to this month. 32.863 hussifs had been made, filled mid forwarded. In 1943 several urgent requests were received for large quantities of hussifs. and helpers responded by working in some cases three full days of the week. instructions had been received from the National I’atriotic Fund Board that there were sufficient stocks of khaki garments on hand "with the exception of pullovers and socks. The committee was therefore issuing khaki wool for these garments only, concluded the mayoress.'*
