COMMENT ON JURY’S VERDICT
Jail Term For Agostini (Received July 1, 1.40 a.ni.) MELBOURNE, June 30. Antonio Agostini, who was charged with the murder of his wife but was found guilty of manslaughter was today sentenced to six years’ imprisonment with hard labour. In passing the sentence Mr. Justice Lowe said he thought tlie jury had been merciful, but the jury by its verdict had negatived any intention on the prisoner’s part, to kill his wife _ or inflict grievous bodilj’ harm. The jur,y had also rejected the prisoner's account that she was accidentally killed.
“My view of the jury’s finding,” lie said, “is that they thought you had been a long time sorely tried by your wife’s conduct, and had been- at the time you attacked her provoked to the limits of your endurance, ami that you then attacked her, inflicting dreadful injuries causing death. The weapom you used must have been very heavy and used with great violence. Sucli conduct is a serious crime.”
