Late War News ENEMY RESERVES
Effort To Patch Up Caen Front USED PIECEMEAL (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. - Copyright.) (Received July 1, .1-30 a.in.) LONDON, June 30. Reuter's correspondent on the TillyCaen front says the Germans are trying desperately to squeeze the British infantry and armour from the deep salient across the Odon. A staff officer said the Germans were hauling up reinforcements wherever they could be found, and were pitching them in piecemeal. , . . „ The correspondent adds that ram led in a deluge throughout the night and converted the battlefield into a quagmire, many routes on which are not more than tracks made by bulldozers over the fields. The German news agency says: “The Allies as before still aim at the encirclement of Caen, with the ultimate design of allowing their ships off the Orne Estuary to disembark. There has been a number of British penetrations of rhe German front, but we are holding out with desperate stubborness.” A violent tank battle is raging on a 15-mili> front south-west of Caeu, where the British are doing their utmost to encircle Caen from the south, says Paris radio. Though the British have gained several bridgeheads over the Odon they have been held in fierce German counterattacks. The British attacks are synchronized with others north-west of Caeu and are strongly supported by Allied naval guns.
