VACATED CAMPS
Alterations For Use By Families There had been a hue and cry about temporary accommodation, but the utilization of military camps was proceeding today, said the Minister of Rehabilitation, Major Skinner, to the R.S.A. Dominion conference yesterday when replying to a conference deputation. He said that alterations were being carried out in various parts to make these places fit to house families. The Government would be criticized throughout the country for this, but it had been suggested to several brandies and the Dominion executive that they recommend this action. If the Government set out without support, there would be wholesale criticism. But it was going ahead and he had.hopes of hundreds of families being accommodated in camps now or about to be vacated. The building of temporary accommodation would not work out. A. State house could be erected in little more time and at not much greater cost than a temporary dwelling. The only temporary accommodation which would be considered was that already existing. Housing was problem number 1. Rehabilitation was no good without a home for a man. He could cite cases where work on unessential buildings had been stopped after several months. The regulations were being administered more rigidly than ever before. The association itself had a responsibility in this matter if it saw an infringement. He knew of cases where its own members had applied for permits outside the regulations; to put up houses and renovate hotels.
