BOGUS PETROL COUPONS
Number In Circulation IMMEDIATE ACTION TAKEN
Instruction To Motorists And Resellers A statement that a number of counterfeit petrol coupons are in circulation was made last evening by iiio Oil Fuel Controller, Mr. G. L. Laurenson. All coui>on-holders are advised that Coupon No. 1, which becomes available today, will not bo redeemed unless it is endorsed on the back with the signature of the person presenting the coupon and with the registration plate number of the motor vehicle. No oil fuel is to be supplied in return for coupons unless it is supplied direct into the tank of the vehicle. A direction that no reseller shall redeem a coupon unless all these conditions are complied with was issued last night by the controller in accordance with the powers conferred on him by the Oil Fuel Emergency Regulations, 1939. Mr. Laurenson asked for the help of all motorists, the general public, and particularly petrol resellers in defeating this “criminal attempt of a group of gangsters” to enrich themselves by debauching the coupon currency, and endangering the very limited supply of petrol so vital to the life of the nation. “Should this publicity and the efforts of the police fail to meet the situation adequately, it will be necessary to cancel all petrol coupons for several weeks,” ‘said Mr. Laurenson.
