Late War News AMERICAN ATTACK

Reported Against St. Lo Area HOPE OF TANK TEST NEAR CAEN (By Telegraph. —Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Received June 30, 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, June 29. Paris radio reports that the American Second Corps has launched an attack in the direction of St. Lo, yi the centre of the Normandy front, and that violent fighting is going on. .... According to reports from the ■ Albert supreme headquarters, repeated German counter-attacks by local troops launched against both sides of the Allied salient on the Evrecy sector across the Odon River have all been held after confused, fierce fighting. The fact that no major counter-attack has been launched is no indication that one will not come in the near future.. The Germans clearly attach the greatest importance to the high ground north of Evercy between the Odon and Orue rivers, where the Allies are now trying to establish themselves firmly, because it controls the roads along which the Germans must supply Caen. It would be misleading to describe the present British operations as a major offensive; they are in the nature of “sticking out the chin" toward the Germans' concentration of armour iu this area.
