Railway Finances Net railway revenue tor the first eight weeks of the current financial year ended on May 27, amounted to £-07,-30. Gross revenue for the period was i-.IVG--610, and expenditure amounted to £1,900,320.
Next-of-kin Emblem. A remit was approved by the ’i S.A. Dominion conference last night: that next-of-kin whose husbands, s nns or daughters have sacrificed . their Lives through- war service, be suitably recognized by the issue of a gold star, or other suitable emblem, which could be woru by them. Coal Mines Council. By amending regulations, gazetted last night, the Coal Mines Council may, where it thinks desirable, exercise its powers to settle any industrial matter relating to coal mines, whether or not any attempt has been made to settle the matter by means of any local machinery available. In such cases the matter will be deemed to be an industrial dispute for the purpose of the regulations.
First of Navel Oranges. The first consignment of Australian navel oranges for Wellington this season wns released this week. As is usually the case the first shipment ■ was small, only 2000 cases. During the past three or four seasons the prices have been fixed according to the size of the oranges, the bigger the friut the higher the price. For this first consignment a flat rate bf 32/6 was charged the trade at the markets.
Arbor Day. Arbor Dav will be observed this year on August -. A notice by the Minister of Interna] Affairs. Mr. Parry, published in last night’s Gazette, states that in view’ of the national importance of treeplanting, local bodies throughout New Zealand are requested to organize SUl l‘ able celebrations on thnt date. . It on account of local climatic conditions in anv district August 2 is deemed unsuitable, the local bodies are invited to observe some other suitable dny m that month.
Just One More Word. “I want only one more word.” said a delegate at the dose of a contribution he was making to a debate at the R.b.A. Dominion conference yesterday. The “one word” was extended to 78 words. The conference rules allow 10 minutes to a mover wilh five minutes for right of reply, and five minutes to each speaker. If each of the 128 delegates exercised bis right on ouly one remit, it would take 10 hours 25 minutes continuous discussion to dispose of it. The conference is sitting nine hours daily.
Hospital Committees. Stating that she considered it undesirable that the board should lose the services of Mrs. Knox Gilmer on the staff and house committee, to which she was not re-elected at the annual statutory meeting. Mrs. S. E. Blake, in a letter to the Wellington Hospital Board last night, asked that she and Mrs. Gilmer be permitted to change places, so that Mrs. Gilmer went to the stag and house committee to which Mrs. Blake was elected and Mrs. Blake went to the building committee to which Mrs. Gilmer was elected. The board agreed to the change.
