NEW GUINEA AND RABAUL
, 80,000 Japanese Remain (Received June 28, 9.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, June 28. About 40,000 Japanese still remain to be eliminated between Hansa Bay and Hollandia, and there is a similar enemy force at Rabaul. This has been revealed by General Blarney, who visited New Guinea and talked with General MacArthur, after his return last week by air from the United States. . General Blarney said the campaign in New Guinea was going well, but there was still a long way to go before it was endcd Lack of material had been the sole restriction hampering the campaign to date, but this deficiency had now been overcome sufficiently for future actions to be planned as desired. . Referring to the war m Europe, General Blarney said he had been most impressed with the extraordinary degree of co-operation that existed in the Allied invasion plans. These had provided a magnificent example of team-work bj United Nations members. The sinking of a 3500-ton Japanese freighter and damage to two enemy ships of 4000 and 3000 tons by air attack is reported in General MacArthur s communique today. The enemy vessels were attacked in waters north of Australia. Liberators raiding Yap shot down eight of 30 intercepting Zeros. One Liberator was lost and others damaged.
