EXEMPTED MEN AND LAND PURCHASES
By a close vote on a show of hands the R.S.A. Dominion conference in Wellington yesterday reinstated and approved a Geraldine remit that a protest be made against the uncontrolled acquisition since the outbreak of war by grade 1 men, single or married, of land which might lie suitable for returned men.. The lands committee had recommended the deletion of this remit, but Mr. G. A, Harris (Temuka) objected, lie said there were still 30,000 grade 1 men retained. Many -were farmers’ sons ami their fathers were buying good land to put them on. Mr. F. 11. Anderson (Cambridge) supported this. Mr. I''. W. Grayburn (Geraldine) said that what Mr. Harris complained of hnd occurred repeatedly in his district. Some grade 1 sons of farmers, among whom were mon who could only be persuaded to attend Home Guard parades by threat of prosecution, were being placed on the best farms in the district.
