BORSTAL DETENTION
“You have been earning good wages, but your conduct has not been altogether satisfactory." said Mr. Justice Johnston In the Supreme Court. Wellington, yesterday in couimlttlng Peter John Johnstone, apprentice mechanic, aged 17. to two years' Borstal detention on a charge of breaking and entering mid theft at Wellington. “You broke into the warehouse of the firm that was employing you. and it was a most deliberate attempt.” His Honour continued An order was made for the return of a camera which had been stolen from the warehouse. “False pretences is a very serious offence, and generally indicates n propensity to crime.” remarked his Honour in committing James Mahaki Brown, labourer, aged 18J. to Borstal detention for two years on charges of false pretences and breaking and entering and theft at Gisborne. "If subjected to proper discipline, there is no reason at all why you should not lead a decent, respectable life," his Honour added. “You must realize that a life of crime is going to keep you In jail if you persist 111 it” An order was made for the return to the owners of the property which had been recovered. Mr. W. R. Birks represented the Crown.
