MERCHANT SEAMEN

Town And Country Help

Recently the Harbour Lights’ Guild in Wellington held its annual bridge party, this year’s event proving that it is as popular as ever. Lovely late flowering chrysanthemums from the Hutt and foliage and berries from, York Ray and Wadestown were admired by those present. Mrs. H. J. Harley Brown and her committee provided a tasty “wartime” tea which was much appreciated. The funds benefited by £4l/5/-. The staff of James Smith have not forgotten the mission though their tearooms are closed. Miss Wit mill handed in at the bridge party £5 collected by Miss Fisher from the staff. The women s committee would like to take this opportunity of thanking the people of Baraparaumu, Te Horo, Otaki, Shannon, Manakau. Feilding, Palmerston North, Levin, Masterton, Carterton, Grey town and Lower Hutt for the generous way m which they have given hospitality to men of the Merchant Service. The Rev. B. J. Williams stated that 900 men have benefited from these country holidays. After the strain of a long voyage, to be able to relax like this, away from the atmosphere of the ship and the sea. is something the men appreciate.
