OLD PINES GOING
Felling Operations In Queen’s Park Skilled bushmen using special logging gear are at present felling a number of old pine trees in Queen’s Park, Wellington. This is the result of a deputation and petition from the residents of Grant Road, who complained that the pines were' keeping the sun off many homes. Members of the parks and reserves committee visited the spot and decided that the trees should go and arrangements were made with a private timber company for their removal. Tn all, about 10 trees are affected. As each one is felled it is cut into logs which are hauled by a winch up on to Wadestown Road. The logs are then removed bv lorry’ to the timber factory where the wood will be utilized in box making. An acute shortage of pinus insignis timber, which is used in the making of boxes and containers for Red Cross, patriotic and other essential war purposes, will be temporarily eased by the cutting up of these trees, which will provide several thousand feet of timber. Smaller trees and gardens are to replace the old pines.
