ACCOMMODATION FOR
FAMILIES Vacated American Camp
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 26. In an effort to alleviate the serious shortage of’proper living accommodation in Auckland City, action is proposed by the city council to convert the vacated American rest camp at Western Springs into accommodation for 40 families. The mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, reported to the council today that the camp buildings were eminently suitable for use as a transit camp for people living in distressing circumstances and waiting to occupy State rental houses under construction. It would be necessary for the occupants to use communal facilities, all of which were adequate and of a high standard. The camp buildings included a fine kitchen and a dining-room capable of seating 200 persons, and there was also n large social hail, canteen, and other auxiliary buildings. Any surplus from the operation of the camp should be handed over to the Government as owners and any loss shared equally between the Government and the city council It was essential that those living at the camp should have priority in the allocation of State houses. . The Acting Prime Minister. Mr. Sullivan, has advised the council that the proposals are accepted in principle and are regarded as practicable, the council to be responsible for allocating tenants. Regarding Government assistance, this should be the subject of negotiation, and a conference should be held in v» ellington as soon as possible.
