WOMAN CHARGED WITH MURDER
Elderly Man Found Dead WOUNDS ON THE HEAD (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 25. Hacked about the face and head, apparently by an axe, the body of Fred Brazier, aged "about 64, was found on Saturday morning in a small back room in a house at 115 Aidwin’s Road, lhe occupier of the house. Mrs. Helen Lewis, aged 32, was arrested and charged with murder. ‘ , Little is known about the dead man, who came to board with Mrs. Lewis within the past six months. The police have not yet traced any of his relatives or anyone who knew him intimately. No one even knows yet where he came from to occupy the room where he met bis death. Mrs. Lewis is the wife of an employee in the Government Broadcasting Service engaged on painting masts at various broadcasting stations., lor some time past he has been working in Dunedin. , . Neighbours beard two , outbursts ot screaming in a woman’s voice during the night. Aircraftman W. A. Harris, who lives next door to No. 115. said that he was awakened by screams and sounds as of furniture being shifted, about 2 a.m. and again at about 4 a.m. He did not interfere. , .. During Saturday afternoon the police received a telephone message to the effect that Mrs. Lewis had reported a tragedy at her home. When Sergeant S. Holder and Detective E. G. Ward went to 115 Aidwin’s Road they found the house locked and the blinds drawn, and had to force an entry. They took possession of two axes. The investigation was continued by Sub-Inspeqto..- J. B. Young and Detective-Sergeant J. J. Hairrow. . , . , , At a special sittine of th® Magistrates Court in the Detective Office on Saturday afternoon, she was charged before Mr. Levvey, S.M., that on June 24 at Christchurch she did murder Fred Brazier. A woman constable stood by her. She was not represented hy counsel and said nothing. On the application of Sub-Inspector Young, for the police, the magistrate granted a remand to Friday next. The police stated that a post-mor-tem would be held, and an inquest would be opened for purpose of identification on Monday. _____
