MEN’S HOCKEY

Saturday’s matches produced no change In the leadership In the Wellington hockey championship. Neither Karori noi Varsity A have yet lost a point, and it would appear that whichever team wins when they meet will head the table at the end of the first round. On form to date it slfould be Karorl, but the Aarsity men have so far always just pulled out that extra goal they need to win and have not exerted themselves more than nccesEa Th’at was rather the case in their win from Wellington College Old Boys- The winning goal did not come till the las quarter of an hour, though they hnd been pressing heavily A big factor in the close margin was .the fine, work of the Old Boys’ goalkeeper. Halgh. who saved his side time and again. Once he went down at full length like a Soccer goalkeeper, with arm.outstretched, to make sure a fast shot from Win Smiler did not get into the bottom right corner of the goal. The Varsity.men had a good many chances of scoring, font their shooting was not oulte on the mark, -notably that, of Ivor Ting. Dowdall played his usual tireless game at centre-half for Old Boys. Karorl, who have not been able to nelu their best team lately, won by a two-goal margin from Hula, .and this bad the effect of widening the gap between the leaders and the rest of the teams, .for Hula had been but two points away from Karorl anil Varsity A. WOMEN’S HOCKEY Excellent conditions prevailed on 'Saturday for the continuation o£ Wellington women’s hockey championship matches. In. the senior A. grade College Old Girls outclassed Petone Old Girls at Woburn, giving a fine display of unison between defence and attack. iMrs. I. Lamason, left wing, and Miss D. Gray, centre forward, were seen to advantage as scoring mediums for C.0.G., being responsible for all the nine goals scored. iMits-s B. Riddell, a Canterbury representative, gave an attractive performance at left half, while Misses E. Mclndoo and S. Smith, full-backs, were sound in defence. For Petone Misses. 1. McMurray, centre forward, and R. Mundic, left half, played outstanding games. Brilliant goalkeeping by Mis® H. Baker and sound full-back work by Miss P. Gardner, were instrumcnt.nl in enabling Varsity to hold Garrison W.A.A.C. to a draw. The students were unfortunate that one of their players injured an ankle before the game. Garrison also experienced misfortune in the loss through, injury of Miss Henderson, right wing, one of the team's best attacking players.
