CARGO VESSEL SUNK
Attack On Enemy Convoy (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Special Australian Correspondeut.) (Received June 23, 11.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, _ June 23. A Japanese convoy of 15 ships was attacked in the Palau group in the western Carolines by a South-west Pacific long-range Liberator about midnight on Tuesday. One medium cargo vessel was sunk. The convoy comprised mainly merchantmen, possibly with an escort of warships. It may have been carrying supplies and reinforcements to the Palau garrison. A further attack on the enemy base of Truk is also reported by General MacArthur’s communique today. Striking in adverse weather, Liberators 'raided Dublon and Woleai.
Light naval units sank three heavilyladen Japanese barges off the west coast of Biak Island in Dutch New Guinea. It is believed that the remnants of the defeated enemy garrison on the island are attempting to escape to the mainland. American patrols on Biak are making progress with their mopping up operations.
